Shouseki is a footprint, the mark left behind.
To leave no trace is to carry neither the road walked nor the proof of having arrived.
What was done is set down; what was seen is let go.
Only where the tracks vanish does the next step move unbound.
Origin
From the Records of Xutang (Xutang Heshang Yulu): in the exchange between Chuanzi and Jiashan, the master tells the disciple to "hide where no trace remains." The phrase also appears in the Book of Serenity (Congrong Lu) as the stage in which even the marks of awakening are erased.
Seal
Cut by hand in Tokyo by the artist. The angle of the blade and the depth of the stroke decide where the ink bleeds and where it holds. No imprint repeats.
