The Womb is principle — the holding that opens and receives.
The Diamond is wisdom — the cutting that does not waver.
Compassion and clear seeing, the sheltering and the unbreakable.
Not two things set side by side, but one regarded from both faces.
Origin
A pairing of the two realms of Esoteric (Shingon) Buddhism: the Womb Realm (Taizōkai), drawn from the Mahāvairocana Sutra (大日経), and the Diamond Realm (Kongōkai), drawn from the Vajraśekhara Sutra (金剛頂経). The Hizōki glosses them as "the Womb is principle; the Diamond is wisdom," held as non-dual (金胎不二). Not a Zen kōan but an Esoteric doctrinal pairing.
Seal
Cut by hand in Tokyo by the artist. The angle of the blade and the depth of the stroke decide where the ink bleeds and where it holds. No imprint repeats.
