On 'Dwelling Nowhere'

ou mu sho juu — Dwelling Nowhere.

On the origin

From the Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedikā): “give rise to a mind that dwells nowhere” (応無所住而生其心). Traditionally the verse that awakened the Sixth Patriarch, Huineng.

On the reading

A mind that settles nowhere — not on having, on judging, on what has passed. The moment it grasps, the thing is already gone. Only a mind that does not abide can meet everything as it comes.

On the garment

The seal for this phrase was hand-carved in Tokyo by the artist Satake Hōsen. The front carries this phrase’s seal; the back and inside label carry the Hōsen seal (寳千), printed in vermilion.

The garment is Bella + Canvas 3001 (short sleeve) or Gildan 2400 (long sleeve). A vessel for the word, not the subject itself.
