Reading
A turning of the gaze from the distance back to the ground one stands on.
When the lamp goes out and the road ahead disappears, the only certainty is the step beneath the foot.
The way is not somewhere far off; it is the earth the foot already touches.
The same word is said to live in the act of setting one's shoes straight at the threshold.
Origin
Transmitted as a saying of the Chan master Yuanwu Keqin. As the story is handed down in the Zen tradition, he was walking a night road with his teacher Wuzu Fayan when the lamp went out, and in the dark he answered the question with two words — "look beneath your feet." The phrase itself also appears in the Blue Cliff Record (case 22); the exact textual source of the anecdote is not fixed.
Seal
Cut by hand in Tokyo by the artist. The angle of the blade and the depth of the stroke decide where the ink bleeds and where it holds. No imprint repeats.
