ou mu sho juu ni shou go shin — Let the Mind Arise Dwelling Nowhere.

On the origin

From the Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā), the “Adorning the Pure Land” section — chapter 10 in Prince Zhaoming’s thirty-two-fold division. The sixth patriarch Huineng is said to have awakened on hearing this line.

On the reading

Let the mind arise without dwelling anywhere. Not on having, not on judging, not on what is gone. The moment it fixes on a thing, the thing has already moved. With no place to abide, the mind can meet whatever comes.

On the garment

The seal for this phrase was hand-carved in Tokyo by the artist Satake Hōsen. The front carries this phrase’s seal; the back and inside label carry the Hōsen seal (寳千), printed in vermilion.

The garment is Bella + Canvas 3001 (short sleeve) or Gildan 2400 (long sleeve). A vessel for the word, not the subject itself.
