Reading
A deity who does not flee defilement but burns it, turning the foul into the clean.
Enshrined where filth gathers — the privy, the lowest room.
Not removal but transformation: purity raised out of what was cast aside.
The place one avoids, seen instead as the place of change.
Origin
Not a Zen phrase but the name of a deity in esoteric Buddhism. A transliteration of the Sanskrit Ucchuṣma ("crackling flame"), a wrathful Vidyārāja descended from the Vedic fire god Agni. His origin is recounted in the Śūraṅgama Sūtra; his rites are set down in the Sutra of the Mighty Ucchuṣma Vidyārāja.
Seal
Cut by hand in Tokyo by the artist. The angle of the blade and the depth of the stroke decide where the ink bleeds and where it holds. No imprint repeats.
